We are going to take a look at one of AOC’s latest gaming monitors. AOC is a relatively new brand who have gained trust in the monitor market section. Many AOC monitor reviews have been written over the last few years, as they offer great specs at an affordable price. AOC is the price to performance king when it comes to specifications per dollar.

But let us get to the actual review:

Main Features

AOC Agon AG241QX is a 2560×1440(2k) 23,8 inch 144Hz 1ms response time Agon monitor.  If you are on a budget and are looking for a 1440 p and high refresh rate (144hz) monitor, you are in the right place.  The 2560×1440 resolution offers crystal clear and sharp images and is currently the sweet spot for gamers. A higher refresh rate than 60 Hz offers a smoother gaming experience, especially for those of you who are into first-person shooters, like Battlefield One, Overwatch or Counter-Strike. The difference is huge and has a great impact on the way you play.

Once you go 144hz, you can never go back to 60hz. The 1ms response time eliminates any kind of screen tearing and ghosting. You may actually not spot the difference until you experience tearing or ghosting yourself on a lower spec monitor.

24 inches may seem small for a 1440 p monitor, however, with a Pixels Per Inch (PPI) of 108,79 it makes up for that with a crystal clear and detailed display, which you will appreciate during your gaming sessions.

The AOC Agon AG241QX supports AMD’s Freesync technology. On the product sheet, the Freesync technology is called Adaptive Sync, which is essentially the same thing. If you have any of the latest AMD graphics cards, you should be able to take advantage of Freesync. What this does is, instead of the graphics card adapting to the performance of the monitor (Vsync), the monitor synchronizes with the graphics card, with the monitor not being a limitation anymore for gaming performances. The free sync range is 30Hz-144Hz, which means that even on very low framerates, you will not experience any kind of stuttering or freezing, which can be annoying, especially if you are gaming for many hours in a row.

The monitor comes equipped with a TN panel and that is why it is mainly aimed towards gamers and not content creators, as the colors may seem a little bit washed out when viewing the monitor from the sides. Content creators or graphics designers are better off with an IPS panel monitor, which offers higher color accuracy. However, for a TN Panel, the colors look really good and should not be considered a problem if your main purpose is gaming. With 16,7 million colors the AOC Agon AG241QX offers great color accuracy and while not comparable with more expensive IPS panels designed specifically for color accuracy, it is nonetheless a great product.

Other Characteristics

The monitor has a great variety of features, which may prove useful. There are plenty of Connectors connectors:

  1. D-Sub
  2. DVI
  3. 2x HDMI
  4. 4xUSB 3.0 one of which is a fast charge port
  5. MHL
  6. Display Port

AOC Agon 241QX has even a headphone stand, which lets you put your headphones on Headphone Standit, without having to worry about where to put them. Low Blue Light is another feature, which, when enabled, does not strain your eyes when having longer gaming sessions even at night.

The monitor comes equipped with a controller, which lets you gain quick access to your customization settings and to the menu itself. The controller is connected to the monitor via a special cable port on the right back side of the monitor and makes it much easier for you to navigate through the menu via the controller. controller

The monitor’s weight is 5,53 Kg and can pretty easily be moved around without any effort.  Inside the packaging you will find:

  • 1x VGA Cable
  • 1x DVI cable
  • 1X HDMI Cable
  • 1x Display Port Cable
  • 1x Audio Cable
  • 1x USB 3.0 Cable
  • 1X Power Schuko C5 Cable

Design

AOC monitors have a characteristic black&red color design with the AOC logo embedded on the back of the monitor. The monitor also features a V-type stand and adjustable height from 0-130 cm. You can easily adjust the monitor’s height according to your playing style and preference and then “save” your height by putting the red arrow on the back at the height you’ve chosen so that you do not forget it in case you want to adjust it again.

The monitor can be moved to the left or right by moving the part of the V-type stand, which means that you do not need to move the stand itself to move the monitor. It can even be moved at a 180 degrees angle, which comes in handy if you want to read an article or even a book online. In order to do that, you have to adjust the monitor’s height to 130 cm and then turn it to the right until the monitor is in the right position.

Right above the V-stand is a little bit of space, which allows for some kind of cable management. While not being the best, it can surely help having your mouse and keyboard cable in one place.

Personal Thoughts and Opinions

Having spent time with the monitor myself, I can assure you that the monitor is an excellent overall product. The AOC Agon AG241QX is the monitor I am currently using as my gaming monitor and the one I am writing this review on right now.

It is stable, looks beautiful and has tons of features at a very affordable price. I’m using this monitor for 1 year now and had no issues with it at all. I am not going to describe the gaming experience in detail, but I will tell you this: The gap between a 60hz and 144hz monitor is huge if you have a graphics card, spending which can support the task as this is a 1440p monitor. But this is something that you can only validate by checking it out yourself. I am really happy with this product and this is why I decided to write this review to help you out.

If you are looking for a 2560×1440 144hz monitor and cannot spend 800-900$ on an ASUS ROG Swift, for example, there is no other place to look. AOC offerings in the gaming monitor market have really come a long way and AOC is considered one of the top brand when it comes to monitors, alongside with Asus, Acer, and Benq.

There is no better price/performance monitor at these specifications on the market right now. I have personally spent one month of searching before I decided to buy this product. And had it not been for the 24 inches and the fact that it is a TN panel it would get a perfect rating.

If you have some extra money to spend I would suggest getting the 27-inch variant as 27″ is the best panel size for 1440 p gaming. However, if you are on a budget, do not hesitate to buy this one, as it is really worth the money.

I hope you liked my review. If you have any questions, please leave a comment below or contact me at johnb@johnpchardware.com, and I will be more than happy to help you out.
