Ryzen+ is the CPU you should buy for gaming and multitasking
Ryzen+ was just released a few weeks ago and AMD has managed to improve on their existing Ryzen platform released in 2017. After 10 years of practically being non-existent, AMD has made a great comeback and has brought back the much-desired competition with Intel who finally has to innovate again and deliver products to their customers that are worth checking out. After all this time, AMD has finally managed to create a CPU development map which they promised to stick to and customers actually know what they will get in the future from AMD. Their roadmap is laid out well and is very promising. Ryzen+ is definitely the platform you should go to for both gaming and multitasking.

Future upgradability is the main reason why Ryzen is the go-to platform at the moment. AMD has promised to include upgradability up to the release of Ryzen 2 planned in 2019-2020. In order to build yourself a great Ryzen system, you need a good motherboard which will last as long as possible and has all the features you need and much room for additional ones. The best way to take advantage of the longevity that Ryzen promises is getting the best Ryzen motherboard you can. The X470 is the perfect chipset which supports extreme overclocking, has a plethora of USB connections and gives you additional headroom with features like M.2 support, the newest audio 8.1 support and RGB customization options which do not only apply to the motherboard itself (more of that in a second).
There are many contestants for the best X470 motherboard as all major manufacturers offer great products at different price points. But, once again, Asus is unbeatable when it comes to delivering great motherboards. Asus is known for their premium quality motherboards and many PC enthusiasts do not even think about getting a motherboard from a different manufacturer.
After going through many X470 motherboards, I can say that the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming is the best motherboard for many reasons. Not only does it not break the bank at around $200, but you get all the features you could possibly ask from a motherboard.
Features and Characteristics
It is time to get into the shiny details of why the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming is the perfect choice for you whether you are primarily gaming, multitasking or both. I will split it into categories, so you can jump right into the part that interests you the most, starting with the most important features:
Overclocking and Cooling
If you are not thinking of overclocking your Ryzen CPU, then X470 is not the motherboard chipset you want to get. The Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming gives you all the overclocking headroom you need with its 6 power phases, big heatsinks and easy BIOS adjustments for tweaking every small detail of your overclock. If you are into auto-overclocking, Asus has you covered with their 5-way optimization which automatically applies a safe overclock while adjusting other system components for optimal temperature and overclocking stability.
Adding fans for more cooling capacity has never been easier since the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming includes 3x fan headers, 1x AIO pump connector for your custom cooling solution and 1x water pump connector. Having multiple fans and monitoring them through the BIOS is very important if you want to create specific cooling profiles for your build.
Memory Performance and Stability
Memory stability has never been an issue for Intel because their processors are optimized for more than a decade now, but for a platform like Ryzen which shipped recently and still needs tweaking and adjustment for optimal performance, memory stability and efficiency was an issue for the initial Ryzen CPUs. Stability issues like incompatibility with high-speed RAM modules and XMP profiles which did not work and demanded manual memory tuning or reverting RAM to stock speeds (2133MHz) was a common issue with Ryzen. Ryzen+ fixed this issue which was necessary as the Ryzen CPU architecture favors high-speed RAM even beyond 3200MHz. The faster RAM, the better.

The Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming has XMP memory support of 3466MHz, which you can enable via the BIOS interface. Remember that even if you have 3400MHz RAM modules, they will only run at stock speeds (2133MHz) and you need to enable the XMP profile in the BIOS in order for them to run at their advertised speed. Asus motherboards rarely had memory stability problems even with the initial Ryzen launch.
Audio and Gaming
Asus has taken audio integration on their motherboards to the next level and the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming is no exception. The Supreme FX audio technology utilizing the S1220A codec provides detailed audio features great for gaming, streaming or simply surfing the web. Their audio technology also provides optimal audio experience for headphones by featuring Virtual Surround support which boosts your gaming experience to another level. Sonic Studio III allows you to individually customize all your applications and programs. You can also prioritize which applications are to be used more so that your audio is mainly focused on tasks that you want it to focus on.
GameFirst IV lets you enjoy lag-free online gaming by ensuring high bandwidth, low-latency gaming, and smooth gameplay. In addition to OverWolf, an integrated application allowing you to browse the internet, check your e-mails or stream your favorite games on Youtube or Twitch while you are in-game, it is certain that neither your gameplay or your browsing activity will be impacted. You can easily switch back and forth between online gaming and browsing while you are waiting for the next online match to start for example.
Aesthetics and Visuals
It is common knowledge that no PC component nowadays would be complete without some beautiful RGB lightning. Asus achieves that by boosting the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming visual experience with 1x Aura strip header and 2x additional RGB headers, giving you plenty options to tweak your motherboard’s color combinations. The metal heatsink on the motherboard has been refurbished with slick-looking RGB gaming logos which give it a premium gaming feel. This addition looks amazing and was one of the first things I noticed when I took my first glance at the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming. It just looks stunning. The board itself feature a plain but stylish black metallic theme which can fit perfectly in any color-schemed build except for white-colored builds.
Aura Sync is an RGB lighting technology developed by Asus which is not only restricted to motherboards but can apply to any Asus-developed hardware like graphics cards, keyboard or monitors. What it does is synchronizing colors between the hardware to create a unique RGB visual experience with just a few clicks. Beyond that, it gives you the option to choose from various lighting presets for your motherboard. These presets can be synced with your RGB strips via the RGB headers. Whether it is static, breathing or wave, there are lots of presets to choose from so you never get bored with a specific RGB pattern. Extension cables for RGB strips are also included so you do not have to spend more money on RGB and can start using the features right away.
USB support and I/O Shield
A big number of USB ports are available on the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming. With 5x USB 3.1 Gen1 Type A ports, 2x USB 3.1 Gen2 Type A and 1x USB 3.1 Type C on the back and 2x USB 3.1 front panel connectors, you will not miss out on connectivity options for all sorts of devices. The motherboard also has an integrated Display Port which most motherboards do not support as the Display Port used is on the graphics card. Nevertheless, it is there, which allows you to take full advantage of the integrated Ryzen graphics which are pretty good and you can even play some games on Ryzen graphics which are based on the 7th generation A-series APU and Vega Graphics.
Ryzen integrated graphics are far superior compared to Intel Integrated Graphics something that can be witnessed in the following video:
There is also support for 2x M.2 devices, one of which comes with an M.2 shield which lowers temperatures, especially useful if you use your M.2 storage for your Windows and important applications. An interesting fact is that Asus decided to integrate the I/O shield on the motherboard, a smart move, in my opinion, as many first-time, or even experienced builders on some occasions may forget to put in the I/O shield. Sometimes, we tend to put in the I/O shield incorrectly which can lead to frustration after realizing that you have to take out the motherboard again and tighten the shield, before continuing with your build. The I/O shield looks beautiful as well. Great move by Asus which should be taken into consideration by all motherboard manufacturers from now on for the sake of simplicity.
Multi-GPU support is pretty common on high-end motherboards and the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming is no exception. 2-way SLI and 3-way Crossfire are supported and Asus also gives you the necessary SLI-Bridge to run multi-GPU configurations if you desire to.
Ryzen invests in compatibility and longevity
Ryzen+ is a platform that should be supported by gamers, content creators, streamers and whoever is into PC building. Ryzen’s strongest selling point is longevity and compatibility besides exceptional performance. It is a wise move to invest in a good motherboard which can be kept for many years even after the release of Ryzen 2 in 2019-2020. You can get away by cheaping out on Intel motherboards who release a new chipset every year but with Ryzen you want something that will be in your system for many years. Buying a high-end Ryzen motherboard by spending a few more $ will definitely compensate your choice in the future.
No features missing on the Asus Rog Strix X470-F
The Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming is an impressive high-end motherboard and the perfect choice for your new or existing Ryzen build. Whether you are gaming or multitasking, this motherboard has all the necessary features and much more. From excellent audio quality to colorful RGB and high-memory speed XMP support, this board has it all. Overclocking is once again on known Asus standards who have made sure that memory stability is not an issue anymore which was also addressed by AMD on their new CPUs.
All in all, the Asus Rog Strix X470-F Gaming is an excellent choice and what I consider the best X470 motherboard you can get your hands on. It’s a product you want to invest in for a great custom Pc build.
